Project description

The new Willamette River Bridge in Portland, Oregon, officially named the Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People in honor of the native peoples who lived in the area as long as 14,000 years ago, is a cable-stayed structure, 1,720 feet long. The bridge is distinctive in the United States, built to carry light rail trains, buses, cyclists, pedestrians and, in the future, streetcars, but not private vehicles. Construction of the bridge began in June 2011, and it is expected to open to traffic in 2015.

The deck of the bridge was constructed in-situ, with the aid of a form traveller (a travelling formwork that extends the deck, section by section). Form travellers are used for free cantilever construction of post-tensioned box girder and cable-stayed concrete bridges, and can enhance the cost-effectiveness of bridge construction projects considerably.

The form traveller used in the construction of the bridge required special bearing fittings to ensure its safe movement, and these were supplied by mageba.
